Irrigation and Drainage Engineering

Irrigation and Drainage Engineering

Introduction

The Department of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering at the College of Technology, SVPUAT Meerut is committed to advancing sustainable water management and precision agriculture practices for improved crop productivity. The department focuses on the design, development, and optimization of irrigation and drainage systems suited to diverse agro-climatic conditions, supporting both traditional and modern farming systems.

From the academic year 2025–26, the department is offering M.Tech. and Ph.D. programs, expanding opportunities for advanced education and research in irrigation science, drainage solutions, and smart agriculture.

Key focus areas include:

•           Micro-irrigation systems (drip, sprinkler, fertigation)

•           Precision agriculture using sensors and automation

•           Drainage solutions for saline and waterlogged soils

•           Water use efficiency and irrigation scheduling

•           GIS, Remote Sensing, and hydrological modelling

•           Conjunctive use of surface and groundwater resources

The college hosts a Drone pilot Training cum-research & Development  Centre, supporting research and applications in aerial mapping, crop health monitoring, and precision input delivery. The department actively promotes interdisciplinary research with other engineering and agricultural disciplines to address complex challenges in resource management.

It maintains strong collaborations with leading institutions including the ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute, ICAR-Indian Institute of Farming Systems Research (both located in Modipuram), and ICAR-IARI New Delhi among others, fostering regional and national innovation.

The knowledge and skills gained from this department enable students to build careers in various government departments such as:

•           Department of Irrigation

•           Department of Agriculture

•           Department of Rural Development

•           Central Water Commission (CWC)

•           Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)

•           State Groundwater Boards

As well as in private and public sector industries including:

•           Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd.

•           Netafim Irrigation

•           Mahindra Agri Solutions

•           L&T Water & Effluent Treatment

•           Agritech startups and consultancy firms

•           All tractor Industries

Students are also equipped with the skills to become agri-tech entrepreneurs, offering services in irrigation design, water auditing, precision farming, and drone-based agricultural solutions.

Programs

DegreeProgram Offered: B. Tech., M. Tech., and Ph. D.

The B.Tech. in Agricultural Engineering has been offered since 2019 and is designed in accordance with the recommendations of the ICAR Sixth Deans’ Committee. The programme comprises a total of 180 credits, out of which 174 credits are delivered through core and elective courses offered by the parent institute. Additionally, students are required to earn 6 credits through online courses of their choice, enabling them to explore emerging areas and interdisciplinary domains aligned with their interests and career aspirations.

Furthermore, the programme includes two non-credit but mandatory components that contribute to the holistic development of students:

  • Deeksharambh (Introduction-cum-Foundation Course) – 2 credits (non-gradial)
