Floriculture and Landscape Architecture

Floriculture and Landscape Architecture

Profile

The Department of Floriculture and Landscaping was founded in 2020–21 to conduct research on various flower crops' production technologies and enhancement. Since then, the department has been putting up endless effort to develop new flower crop technologies, such as postharvest flower crop management. Presently, there are 03 scientists working in the department. The department carved into with the aim to devise location-specific, tailor-made technologies for sustainable production by undertaking basic and strategic research and education for enhancing the productivity of flower crops and their utilization or value addition thereof. The department has the intake of 04 students at the master’s level and 04 students at the Ph.D. level, where the course curriculum has been designed and implemented as per the BSMA committee of the Vth dean’s committee of ICAR.

The development of integrated nutrient management packages, the standardization of environmentally friendly cultivation methods like conservation agriculture, the development of technology on enriched nutrient media to reduce the use of inorganic fertilizers, the development of technologies for improving resource/input use efficiency, and the protected cultivation of high-value flower crops are among the main research activities. The department plays a key role in the creation of numerous technologies that are beneficial to farmers. Additionally, through extensive extension efforts, it is successfully executing numerous schemes throughout multiple districts and efficiently promoting the institute's innovations in order to improve the socioeconomic standing of flower growers. The department has all the facilities it needs to conduct innovative research on flower crops, including labs and secure buildings. Research activities in the department are being undertaken mainly on germplasm collection, evaluation, and maintenance of flower crops; identification of eco-friendly chemicals for enhancing the vase life of flowers; and their genomics and proteomics studies. Moreover, the department is equipped with state-of-the-art research laboratories and modern equipment for carrying out innovative research on flower crops.

Research and extension Achievements:

The Department of Floriculture and Landscaping is working on various flower crops suitable for the North West Plain Zone region and may be adopted for this region. As a result, the following achievements have been done so far:

  • Optimized the low-cost production techniques by using organic manures and natural farming systems for different flower crops like tuberose, marigold, gladiolus, gerbera, etc.
  • Identified superior germplasm of different flower crops for cultivation in the Northwest Plain Zone region.
  • Promoting the protected cultivation in greenhouses, polyhouses, and flower crops by using different media
  • One research project on flower crops has been carried out. In addition to that, 01 research project on the hi-tech center for flower crops has been completed.
  • Departments have organized 01 training program on value addition in flower crops.
  • Organized a national conference to discuss the burning issues on flower crops.
  • Producing the planting materials for crops like tuberose, gladiolus, marigold, etc. Corms/bulbs and seeds of these crops are being distributed to the local farmers.
  • Providing the day-to-day consultancy related to the flower crop to the farmers by online and offline means of communication

Facilities

  • We have sufficient number of smart class rooms fully occupied with interactive panel board to take the classes very effectively
  • We have common laboratories for PG and Ph.D. students. Beside these we have Post harvest laboratory, tissue culture and molecular biology laboratory also.
  • We have open field lab to conduct the experiment at HRC.
