Historical Background of Central Library

The Library plays pivot role in technical education and is also termed as store house of knowledge. Libraries have been providing all types of services for the complete satisfaction of the students. Libraries are also expecting to extend their services in a manner so that the user many get the required piece of information within very small time having more satisfaction. The quality of education as well as institute is judged based on the availability of Books, Periodicals, Journals and other reading material in the library along with the teaching staff. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture & Technology of Meerut came into existence on 2nd October, 2000 following the notification no. 3204A/12-08-2000-400{96}99 dated 27.09.2000 by the Government of Uttar Pradesh under the Uttar Pradesh (Krishi Evam Prodyogik Vishwavidyalaya Adhiniyam) 1958 {U.P. Act XLV of 1958}. The University has unique honour of being called first Agriculture University of the Third Millennium and the 21st century.

About Library

Library is the principal resource and knowledge centre in the present era of information technology. The university library of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture & Technology of Meerut was started at old campus in 2000. After that it was shifted in colleges & administrative building of university in order of building construction. Presently, it is running in at ground floor of administrative building. The new Library building of SVPUA&T, Meerut is G+1 type. It is being constructed in 5179.85 sqm (GFArea 2775 sqm+First Floor 2404.85sqm) area. The Entrance Fire, Clock room, Issue Counter, Printing/Classification room, Book Binding, Administration room (Librarian, Assistant Librarian), Central Atrium, Technical Section/Photocopy/Office, Conference room, Periodical section, Reference Books, Reading room, E-Library sections are being constructed at ground floor and Text Book Loan, Reading rooms, Special Reading room, Group study room, Group discussion room, Seminar room at the first Floor. The Library has a total Books/Periodicals store capacity of more than one Lakhs Books and seating capacity of more than 550 students. At present it can accommodate approximately half of the students registered in different courses of SVPUA&T Meerut. The library building construction is expected to be complete in September, 2019.

Library Administration

This node of university administration is under continuous monitoring / surveillance of one Officer In-charge from the teaching faculty. Dr I. P. Singh, Associate Professor, Department of Horticulture was the founder Officer In-charge of the central Library. Since, then the different members of Teaching Faculty wear the responsibility of Officer In-charge as an Additional duty.

The Technical Staff Strength

The Government of Uttar Pradesh state sanctioned the total five posts including two posts of Assistant Librarian and one each as Book Binder, Library Assistant and Library Attendant to the Central Library vide Letter No. 1725/12-8-2002-5001101/2001 dated 17.09.2002 & No. 437111/Ag Edu. Res-04-5001101/2001 dated 15.07.2004. The four candidates against these posts are working in the Library and one is transfer to College of Veterinary & Animal Sciences. The present staff strength of Library is as under:

Services

University library has adopted open access system with card catalogues (author/subject and title wise) and Dewey decimal classification scheme. It is planned to expand computerization of the activities in the library. The library is kept open from 10:00 am to 7.00 pm on all working days. The books are issued to faculty members and students for definite period. The rules for library services are followed strictly.
