About the Department

The Division of Fruit Science has been created in June 2019 with the bifurcation of the Division of Horticulture, which was constituted in 2000. The Division is a premier centre of education and research. The major activity of the Division is to conduct teaching and research to improve production, productivity and quality of different fruit crops. The Division has significantly contributed through research for the advancement of Horticulture by addition of updated knowledge in fruit crops and providing practical know-how to the problems facing fruit industry. The research activities are undertaken with the following broad objective:

• Introduction, hybridization and evaluation in papaya for better yield and quality, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses and different characteristics suited for commercial cultivation.
• Introduction, maintenance and evaluation of mango, citrus, guava and papaya germplasm for breeding and evolving promising genotypes.
• Improvement through molecular characterization with the help of Division of Finger Printing and in vitro propagation of fruit crops for their fast multiplication.
• Establishing high-density orchards in mango, Kinnow, ber, pomegranate, sapota, aonla and guava with canopy management and other agronomical practices.
• Popularizing the use of biofertilizers for substituting inorganic sources and to improve fruit quality in papaya as well as medicinal plants.
• Improving fruit quality in papaya and kinnow with the application of macro- and micro-nutrients for sustainable production.
• Combating fruit cracking problem in bael production through collection, evaluation and identification of different genotypes, incorporation of organic matter into the orchard as well as rejuvenation of ber and bael orchards through frame working with modified ring budding technique.
• To know about the causes of acute problem mango malformation and its suitable remedy to minimize this malady.
• Regular orchard visit to solve the problems on spot and preparation of extension standy boards and manuscripts for the benefit of the fruit growers.
• Beyond these, strong emphasis is given on human resource development for Horticultural Industry, the need of the hour through establishment of Tissue Culture Unit for under graduate and post-graduate teaching and organizing Experiencial learning of Micropropagation and Plant Tissue Culture programme in production, breeding and molecular research on fruit crops.
